About the Random Team Generator

The Random Team Generator splits any group of people into balanced, random teams in a single click. Paste in a class roster, an office invite list, a sports-day sign-up, or a hackathon registration and pick anywhere from 2 to 10 teams. The tool uses a cryptographically-secure shuffle, then distributes names round-robin, which guarantees the team sizes stay as even as possible — an 11-person, 3-team split becomes 4-4-3, never 6-3-2. Assignment within that structure is fully random, so cliques and repeat pairings get broken up naturally. Teachers use it for PE lessons and group projects, coaches use it for scrimmages, offsite organizers use it for icebreaker teams, and game-night hosts use it to build fair board-game squads. Every team header is editable — rename Team 1 to Red Dragons, House Stark, Marketing, or whatever matches the event. Hit Shuffle again as many times as you need, copy the final roster to your clipboard, and you're done. Free, no signup needed.

Frequently asked questions

How balanced are the teams?+

The generator distributes names as evenly as possible: if you have 11 people and 3 teams, you'll get sizes 4-4-3, never 6-3-2. Assignment within that size structure is fully random, so no team gets stacked with the same faces every time.

Can I re-roll if I don't like the teams?+

Yes. Hit Shuffle again as many times as you want — every click uses a fresh cryptographically-secure random shuffle. Nothing is remembered between shuffles, so a re-roll is genuinely a new draw.

How many teams and how many people can I use?+

You can split any list into 2 to 10 teams. There's no upper limit on names — paste a class of 30, a company of 200, or a tournament roster of 500 and the tool splits them in your browser instantly.

Can I set custom team names?+

Yes. Each team header is editable — click it to rename Team 1 to Red Dragons, Marketing, House Stark, or whatever fits the event. Renames persist through re-shuffles until you clear the draw.
